Here's Lila trying to lick the cat. Posted by Picasa
Unfortunately, I'm still sick. I was actually in the emergency room on Saturday night because the doctor was concerned about how high my temperature was and her office obviously was not open. It took them three pokes, two nurses, and one big bruise to get an IV in me (so they could give me fluids - i was dehydrated) and they still had to stick me a fourth time to get blood for cultures.

After all of that and them sticking things down my throat and up my nose, they were able to tell me that it's not the flu or strep throat, it doesn't look like a breast infection, and my blood tests were all normal. Three and a half hours of torture so they could tell me "We don't know." Oh well. Lila was a total trooper through the whole thing, even when I had to nurse her while walking and then having my blood pressure and temperature taken. Exciting times! :o)~

This is a good sleepy stretch. This photo was taken after 20 minutes of trying to wake her up (so i could feed her then we could go out to eat) with no success. Posted by Picasa

Breast infections were conceived in the fiery depths of *hell*.

My whole body either aches or has sharp pains shooting through it. My skin is extra sensitive to the touch from head to toe. Breastfeeding feels like someone is ripping my nipples off. My eyes feel like they're baking in their sockets, but I'm freezing cold. Every time I stand up, the whole world moves on me. My throat is so dry that no amount of water can quench my thirst. On top of all that, I was having trouble going to sleep because I was afraid my temperature would continue to rise and cook my brain. It was up to 102 when I went to bed and that's with antibiotics and a couple of Tylenol in my system. I am pleased to report that it is down to 101 after laying in bed for a while, so I guess it's safe to sleep after all. I was having paranoid visions of having to be taken to the emergency room in the wee hours of morning and trying to figure out how to get Lila fed and get someone to come and take care of her so she didn't have to be in the disease-ridden hospital with me.

In short, I do not recommend getting one for yourself.

21.10.05

It would seem that I have another breast infection. Blah.

This is exciting though - Lila laughed yesterday! It wasn't a chuckle, but it was definitely a laugh. Big open-mouthed grin and a "haaa". Way too cute! We spent about 15 minutes last night trying to get her to do it again (because, of course, her first time was while daddy was at work), but she wasn't interested in performing for us. She finally did it again this morning though.

She's definitely a morning person. When she wakes up for her 7ish feeding, I'll nurse her and then hand her off to Doug. He changes her and then gets some good Daddy play time before he has to go to work. She's all smiles and flailing limbs and very cute! It's a good thing because when he comes home in the evening she's usually tired and kind of grumpy. :)

19.10.05

Well, I did get out and walk with Lila on Monday and later in the evening I did my strengthening exercises. It didn't happen yesterday though. I told myself that it was because we had people coming over in the evening and I didn't want to get sweaty, but that was just an excuse. The thing is, I don't mind sweating in a gym, but I hate sweating in outdoor heat. I can't explain it. I just don't like it.

This morning I ordered a Pilates video that is highly rated, so I'll add that to my exercise options too. I'm not giving up on walking outside, but this will give me another option if I don't feel like going out in the heat or giving myself an allergy attack. When the weather cools off and I *want* to be outside, that's when I have my worst allergy problems. :( Anyway, enough whining - onward to good health!

17.10.05

It was an exciting weekend with all the family in town. All the attention wore Lila out so much that she went 7.5 hours between feedings on Saturday night! That means that Doug and I got 6ish hours of uninterrupted sleep - wow! It's tough work being so cute, you know. All those admirers wanting to hold her... But now it's Monday, all the family has gone home, and we're back to normal life.

My goal for this week is to start getting some exercise. Unfortunately, I don't think going to the gym will work at this point. But, now that fall is finally arriving, I plan to start taking a walk with Lila in the afternoons. I can just put her in the front carrier and walk around the neighborhood. And once Doug gets home I can take a few minutes to do some stomach and back strengthening exercises.

Here's Lila all crashed out on her Daddy. Just look at those cheeks!!! :) Posted by Picasa

Here she is with Grammie and Papa Joe. In all the excitement, we didn't think to get posed photos of her with other family members... Posted by Picasa

14.10.05

Well, another week is almost over. The time has been going so quickly! And my baby just keeps growing. How do you make that stop?!? She's already about to outgrow her first outfit. That's so sad! Soon she'll be in college... [sigh]

We're taking part in a Baby Dedication service at church this Sunday. There is quite a bit of family coming to town to be there. Doug's parents, some of my parents, an aunt and uncle, a great-aunt, and four cousins of various types. Only Doug's parents are staying with us, but it will be a full house on Sunday! This is the first major event since our little Lila Bean was born, so I'm a bit anxious. Not for her - she'll get loads of attention and just eat it up. I'm more concerned about *me* feeling overwhelmed! :oI~

12.10.05

I am one whooped Mommy today. Doug had training on Monday evening and conference calls yesterday evening, so I've been on Lila duty nearly non-stop for two-and-a-half days. It's my job and I enjoy it, but I'm starting to feel rather drained! Today I put Lila in the swing in our bedroom after her morning feeding so that I could catch a little extra sleep. She was nice and snoozed in the swing (not in motion) for an hour.

Since then I've mostly been focusing on the out of control laundry situation anytime I'm not dealing with her. We had a full laundry hamper and then another hamper's worth in a pile in the bathroom floor! I'm getting it done slowly, but surely. I will get a bit of a break this evening though. Doug is going to stay home and take care of Lila while I go to our last class at church.

10.10.05

Lila and Mommy and Daddy are doing well this week. She even let us get some good sleep last night! She's getting really strong and can hold her head up and steady for a little while now while sitting on your lap. She's also completely mastered the art of bringing her fists to her mouth and pedaling her legs like she's running.

She hasn't started grabbing for things yet, but she will intentionally touch things. Like this weekend when she kept touching her Daddy's funny, scratchy beard. Of course, whenever she does something new or with more control, we tell her how wonderful she is. She may not understand the words, but she understands the excitement in our voices! I want encouraging words to be something she's used to hearing her whole life! :)

This was her first time to wear her little red hood and it seems she wasn't very fond of it. She just didn't realize how cute she was! Posted by Picasa

5.10.05

Here's a funny Lila story (hopefully it will be as funny in the telling as it was when it actually happened) - When we put her down to sleep, we swaddle her up into a little baby burrito and put her on her back on a sleep positioner (a covered foam pad with wedges on each side to snuggle her between so she can't roll over). Then we sometimes put a second blanket over her up to her shoulders and tuck the sides under the sleep positioner so it doesn't get pushed to the side when she starts wiggling.

Wow, that's a lot of background information! Here's the actual story part: A couple of nights ago, Doug and I were cleaning up after dinner and we heard her start announcing that she was awake and would like some attention. I went into her room to get her and for just a moment I thought she wasn't in the bed. "Where's the baby?!?" Then I realized that she had managed to squirm down on the sleep positioner until her head was completely under the blanket that was tucked over the top!

I assure you, it was very funny. Maybe if I had taken a picture... :)

3.10.05

Lila is six weeks old now (as of last night)! And, of course, she's still adorable! She's turning out to be a morning person, at least so far. She wakes up in the morning all smiles and coos and squeals. She definitely recognizes us and gives us big intentional smiles now. Daddy gets more smiles than I do, but that's to be expected.

She's very aware these days. If she hears a new voice, she'll look for the source of it and check out the new person! She can hold her head up and move it around like a big girl now. Of course, she still gets tired quickly, but she's getting stronger every day! I think she's starting to discover that her hands belong to her and are always attached to her arms. She's managed to get a hand to her mouth several times in the past few days. Babies are so cool! :)

30.9.05

You know, some dads are afraid of their babies, especially when they're newborns. Not Doug! He never really acted like he was afraid to hold Lila and he's pretty much fearless now. He's been making her "dance" since she was just a few weeks old. It's the funniest thing ever! Every time he does it (or when i watch the video we took of one of her dances) I laugh until I cry. If you visit, you should request a show!

Also amusing is the fact that Lila has a receding hairline. She's losing her newborn hair, which is not surprising. It's just funny that she's losing it from the front first. I thought it would come out on the back of her head first, where she rubs it around on the bed. Anyway, I'll be interested to see if she gets bald and stays that way and/or what it will look like when the new stuff grows in! :)

28.9.05

Here's a story that's in keeping with my ability to injure myself in random ways: Yesterday, when Lila and I were leaving my appointment with the counselor, it was *absurdly* hot outside. So rather than put my child directly into the oven that was my car, I started the engine and got the air conditioner blasting and left a back door open to let the hot air out.

Then she and I went to stand in the shade for a few minutes while the car cooled down. Unfortunately, I managed to stand in an ANT BED! I'm sure it was an amusing sight for anyone watching as I started to hop around and try to get the ants off my feet (i was wearing flip-flops). Thankfully, Lila was in her car seat and I only found one ant trying to make its way up the side. That ant quickly lost its life and my child and I relocated. Darn ants!

26.9.05

Well, really, Lila's not doing much different this week than last week. She's still the cutest baby ever though! She's still working on discovering her hands and feet. She's really good at winging them around, but that's about all so far. She'll realize they are part of her body soon. I can't wait to see what she does then!

I've been playing "This Little Piggy" with her, but I can only remember about half of it... We also put some sock rattles on her last night, but the rattles are so quiet that she didn't even notice. She's making lots more noises these days too! When she starts 'talking', she makes the cutest squealing and cooing noises - and the occasional shockingly loud yell. Oh, she had a First yesterday. She was on her belly and she picked her head up and turned it the other way! Go Lila! :)

21.9.05

Okay, I'm feeling a bit better this morning, thanks to antibiotics and Tylenol, so I'll try posting again...

Lila is getting smarter by the hour! She can track people with her eyes now and will watch someone walk across the room. She's also started showing an interest in mobiles and brightly colored toys. Her favorite "toy", however, seems to be the accent cushions on our couch. They have lots of colors and shapes and she loves to stare at them and talk to them.

Her neck is getting stronger and stronger too. She can hold her head up for several seconds at a time when she's upright and she can *almost* pick her head up and turn it the other way when she's on her belly. She really doesn't care for spending time on her belly. She'll put up with it for a few seconds and then get frustrated with her limited mobility and start fussing. Gotta work on those muscles though!

Uuuggghhh... mastitis... [whimper]

I still plan to update you on how beautiful and amazing our daughter is, but it will have to wait until I don't feel like I'm dying.

Our little Bow Head. What's the fun of a baby if you can't do silly things to them...? Posted by Picasa

This is what happened when I left my mom alone with Lila while I took a shower. She said the mohawk was payback for spitting up on her. :) Posted by Picasa
Lila has continued to initiate her family members with bodily fluids. I got the poop. Doug got the projectile spit-up. Irene got pee. I don't think she actually managed to hit her, but Lila tried to pee on her Grammie twice. In case you didn't know, little girls can pee straight up in the air too. My mom got spit up in an interesting place. She was forcing kisses on Lila so she spit up and it went down Grandmama's shirt and into her bra!

Scroll down for a couple of new photos. :)

Here is a more detailed account of my labor and delivery, for those who are interested:

I woke up around 5:15 a.m. with what I was pretty sure were contractions. I waited for an hour or two to make sure they were regular and not going to stop before I woke Doug up. The contractions stayed at around 7 minutes apart for the whole morning and we just waited around the house for them to get stronger and closer together. Around lunchtime, while we were watching a movie, they suddenly got further apart and more sporadic. I was worried that the contractions were stopping and that it wasn't truly labor. However, I got up from the couch a few minutes later to go to the restroom and my water broke!

There was no doubt that that's what had happened because it was quite a big gush! I called my doctor's office and was told to go on to the hospital. So, we finished the movie we'd been watching, grabbed our bag, and left. Once I got to the hospital, the contractions became more intense and frequent. Doug was with me and my good friend Ellen. As the labor went on, the contractions got harder and harder to deal with and after I'd been having them for 13 hours, I decided I wanted an epidural. It wasn't what we'd planned on, but I felt like I'd put up a good effort and was confident in my decision.

After the epidural, I was in much less pain, naturally. I could still feel a lot of pressure though, so I knew when I was having a contraction. I was at 6 cm when I got the epidural and within the next few hours I rapidly finished dilating to 10 cm. It was finally time to start pushing. The doctor told me what I needed to do and we got all set up and ready. Pushing is really hard work! I didn't get to do it for very long though. Once I started pushing, Lila started showing signs of distress and we had to make some quick decisions about what to do next.

First, her heartrate dropped during the pushing. That is actually normal, but the part that was worrisome was that the heartrate did not come back up to normal once the pushing stopped. I had to take a break and lay on my side for a while before her heartrate came back up. Once it did come back up, it was actually too high. They think this was because I had a fever (had an infection in my uterus and spiked a fever just before pushing started) and it was stressing out her system. The doctor said that I probably had another hour to hour and a half of pushing left and she didn't think Lila could tolerate that.

So, we decided to do an emergency c-section. They prepped me and prepped Doug and whisked me away to the operating room. Since I already had an epidural (and i was even more glad at this point), all they had to do was turn up the amount of pain medication and wait for it to take effect. Once I couldn't feel pain in my abdomen anymore, they brought Doug back into the room and started the procedure. To be honest, it was the most terrifying thing I've ever been through! I was worried about the baby and I was freaked out by what was being done to my body.

I couldn't feel pain, but I could feel pressure and tugging. Even though I was draped and couldn't see what was taking place, I knew that I was feeling myself being cut open and my insides pushed around and a baby pulled out! On top of that, I was having tremors from the anesthesia (that's normal) and it was very disconcerting. Anyway, terrifying as it was, everything went smoothly and my baby girl came out at 10:51 p.m. Healthy and beautiful. The cord was wrapped around her neck, so that was probably the reason for the initial drop in heart rate during pushing.

After the doctors cleaned her up and checked her out, Daddy got to hold her and then they brought her and laid her on my chest. It was such an overwhelming moment that I don't even remember what I was feeling. After just a few minutes, they took her away to the nursery (daddy went with her) to check her out some more and clean her up while they closed me up. It felt like a lifetime that they spent sewing me up, but once they were done I was taken to the recovery room and we were all brought back together. The anesthesia started to wear off and the exhaustion set in. It was quite an ordeal!

7.9.05

Doug and I have now both been initiated by Lila. Doug got some projectile spit-up a couple of days ago and I got pooped on this afternoon. It was really quite gross. Thanks to that incident, she's on her third outfit for the day. The first one had to go because she let so much milk leak out the side of her mouth while she was nursing that it soaked the shoulder of her shirt.

I think the pooping was payback for all the time we spend sitting around laughing at her while she's working on poots and poopies. She makes some very funny faces and does a lot of grunting. It's not very ladylike, but it's quite amusing! The spit-up adventure was a protest against being burped, which she hates. She growls and tries to throw herself off the shoulder or lap (depending on how we're burping her)!

4.9.05

Lila watched her first UT football game last night. Well, technically she just nursed in the same room as the game and then fell asleep laying on my chest. She seemed to enjoy it anyway. Hook 'em! :o)~

She is a good nurser and she's growing like crazy. There is no doubt that she's getting enough to eat. It usually takes a baby until it's 2 weeks old to regain its birth weight, but she was there by just over one week. A baby usually gains about one ounce per day starting at five days old. She was gaining two ounces per day for a while there. I don't know about now, but she has another doctor's appointment on Wednesday and we'll find out then. Maybe all that eating will make her little bum fill out so her diaper will quit sagging and showing her plumber's crack!

She's here! Lila Evangeline Peeler has finally made her grand entrance into the world. She was born at 10:51 p.m. on Sunday, August 21st. She weighed 7 lbs. 1 oz. and is 19.5 inches long. Oh yes, and she's absolutely stunning! :)

It was a bumpy ride though. I don't feel like typing it all out right now (i'm taking a quick email break while she naps), but the short version is: I labored for 17 hours and then had to have a last-minute c-section. Mommy and baby came through the surgery fine and were able to come home from the hospital on Wednesday. On Thursday, we were back at the doctor because my incision had a seroma (i don't remember exactly what that means, so let's just call it an infection). Now I'm having to go to the wound care clinic at the hospital every few days and Doug is having to "change my packing" on the other days. There have been other adventures, but those details will have to come later in the full account.

I just wanted people to know that she's here and we're home and we love her to pieces!

Still pregnant. I went to the doctor again yesterday and all still looks fine. The labwork that I had done on Monday all came back normal. Since I'm overdue, they put me on the monitor for 20 minutes to make sure the baby is looking okay (heartrate and movements). The doctor said she looks perfect - she's very happy in there. They also did a very brief ultrasound to check the amount of fluid around the baby.

I guess there's some risk of not having enough fluid for the baby to function properly or something. Anyway, I still have plenty of fluid - enough that the doctor was shocked. She said if my water did break in public, people would be disturbed. :o)~ I escaped without a physical exam, so I don't know if I'm any more dilated, but that's fine with me.

They did send me for more bloodwork again though because my blood pressure was still a bit high and there was a trace of protein in my urine (if that means anything to you). I'm also still on "modified bed rest". At the very least, I will have this baby on Tuesday. That's the day my doctor scheduled me for induction. Please pray that I will go into labor on my own though - I really don't want to be induced!

17.8.05

Stiilll pregnant! I went to the doctor on Monday afternoon because I thought perhaps my water had broken and when I talked to the nurse she said they could only tell for sure if I came in. So, I went and first they thought that it had (that was a crazy-feeling five minutes), but then determined that it hadn't. They double-checked just to be sure, and no amniotic fluid. That's a good thing though.

However, my blood pressure was high again and since I'm also starting to swell in my hands and feet, they were slightly concerned about pre-eclampsia. So, they sent me for some blood work to make sure I'm not getting really sick. And now I'm back on modified bed rest, which means I'm supposed to be a "couch potato." No more trying to walk myself into labor. Bah humbug! I have another appointment tomorrow.

15.8.05

My due date was Saturday. I am still pregnant.

There are going to be some very tired and cranky people in our neighborhood today. At about 11 p.m. last night, a bunch of trucks and heavy machinery appeared on our street, almost directly in front of our house. They proceeded to turn off the water and start making a *lot* of noise. Since when is it normal for the city to do work on the water system in the middle of the night?!?

They were at it ALL night long. I woke up at 4:30ish and could still hear these loud booming/banging noises. I don't know what they were doing, but they were gone by the time I got up. The only reason it didn't really bother us is because we have a fan and a humidifier going in our bedroom and we hear nothing we don't want to. I feel so bad for the folks around us though - especially those with bedrooms closer to the ruckus. Crazy...

12.8.05

I had an appointment with the doctor yesterday, but there's nothing exciting to report. Tomorrow is my due date - crazy!

This morning we gave Charlie his final dose of medicine (with minimal drama). I sincerely hope that we got enough doses down him to clear up his problem because I don't want to deal with this again! I'll have to check his litterbox later to see how things are looking. Exciting, eh? :o)~

We finally knocked out our Thank You notes from the second shower (and random gifts) yesterday. I was starting to wake up at night and worry about them. I didn't know when we'd get them done if not before the baby is born. Now I just have to wait for a few addresses to filter in from people and that is one more thing off the list!

10.8.05

Nothing new going on here. I don't want to talk about being pregnant or the baby.

We are having some continued adventures with Charlie. I went to the vet on Friday and picked up a prescription for him - some anti-inflammatories to try and get his little body back in order. Giving medication to a cat is never fun, but if it's something relatively non-offensive, you can usually trick them by sticking it in with some food. We tried this technique with Charlie's new medication and it did not work.

The first time he ate around the pill, so the next time we crushed it up and mixed it with the food and he just refused to touch the food at all. We also tried tricking him by giving him a couple of treats and then slipping him a pill. No luck. So, we had to resort to holding him down and putting the pill down his throat. This is still only marginally effective though.

If it doesn't work the first time and he gets all freaked out, it's nearly impossible to get his jaws back open - he's strong! Also, apparently these pills are very bitter and Charlie finds them to be the most vile thing he's ever encountered. If it takes a couple of attempts to get the pill down him and it starts to disentigrate on his tongue, he foams at the mouth and gets these long drool strings on either side like a slobbering dog!

He's actually convinced that we're trying to poison him. We had so much trouble over the weekend that I went back to the vet's office on Monday and bought a "piller". This is like a long syringe that allows you to sort of pop the pill into the back of his throat without sticking your whole hand in his mouth. It still took me a while to get the hang of using it.

I was being too nice at first and only putting it on the back of his tongue, which meant that he could just spit it back out and run. It has to go all the way into his throat and then you quickly rub the front of his throat to encourage him to swallow. This also has the benefit of keeping the pill from dissolving at all on the tongue, so he doesn't really taste it.

I think we've successfully gotten the pill down him the past two attempts, with a minimum of backflips or foaming at the mouth. Now, hopefully, it will do him some good. Although dosing will be disrupted again once I go into labor. Well, we shall see. I tried explaining to him that this was for his own good, but he didn't believe me...

8.8.05

I'm 39 weeks pregnant now. I would prefer not to be pregnant at all. Did you know that only 5% of babies are born on their expected due dates, meaning 95% are either earlier or later? I'll bet you can guess which side of the due date I'm hoping for! She could be born any time now or she could make us wait. The absolute latest that my doctor will let me go without inducing is August 25th though.

At least I know I don't have to wait indefinitely! At some point, this baby *will* come out of my body. However, I'm really hoping to go into labor on my own. Labors induced with Pitocin are generally more painful and intense than those that start naturally. In the meantime, Doug and I are trying to relax and have as much couple-fun-time as we can. We went to a show on Friday night and a movie on Saturday night.

5.8.05

Poor Charlie has stress colitis. He does not like it when we change things and sometimes he gets so stressed out that he gives himself diarrhea. This time the change that he doesn't like is that they aren't allowed to sleep with us at night anymore. Remember when I said they were handling that change so well that I was nervous and waiting for some kind of revolt? Well... this is pretty revolting. :o)~

On a totally different note, I'm finding myself nervous about postpartum depression. I know that I might not have a problem, but given my tendency toward depression and anxiety anyway, I'm afraid I will. Some of those feelings are normal after a baby - 60 to 80% of new mothers get the postpartum blues. Only about 10 to 20% get postpartum depression. Well, I know what to look for and we'll see what happens!

3.8.05

We're all still just waiting around for this birth thing to happen. Doug is trying to get things wrapped up at work. I'm reading up some more on breastfeeding (The Nursing Mother's Companion). Lila is studying for her Apgar tests. She's a bit nervous about the one minute test, but feels confident about the five minute. (ha... haha... that was a joke.)

When I'm home, I spend a fair amount of time tidying and preparing. But I'm also starting to feel a strong urge to be out of the house. I don't know if it's because I really need a break from all this waiting or if it's because I know that leaving will not be so easy soon. Either way, spending a little time reading and relaxing at Border's seems to do the trick. :)

1.8.05

I'm 38 weeks pregnant now and my due date is coming up soon! Lila's just waiting for the right time to be born. Her lungs and brain are developed enough for her to function now but will continue to mature right into childhood. By my estimations, her arm and leg muscles are very well developed too! I plan on taking it easy for the next couple of weeks. I mean, I have a lot to do, but there's no point in stressing/wearing myself out.

This may be my last opportunity to relax for a long time! I only wish Doug had more time to relax too. I can't imagine how different this will be when I already have a child to think about and make arrangements for. Of course, at this point, I don't ever want to be pregnant again! But I know that in a couple of years pregnancy/childbirth amnesia will have set in and we'll be planning on another one...

I was telling Doug yesterday that last week - heck, even a few days ago - I could truly imagine us with a baby. It seemed real and I could picture (to some extent) taking care of it and how life would be different. Now it's gone back to being this vague concept that I can't quite comprehend. I *know* there's something alive inside my body and that it will come out eventually and we'll bring it home. But, a baby...?

Sometimes it feels like there's just too much you need tok now to care for a newborn. I know we need to prepare as much as we can ahead of time. I have the number for a lactation consultant if we have problems breastfeeding. I feel like we should make sure we have plenty of food in the house, but how can I do that when we don't even know when the baby will come? I'm at least glad we took the Bradley class!
